Increased risk of infections in smoldering multiple myeloma in the Icelandic iStopMM study
Dr. Sigrún Thorsteindóttir
Infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in multiple myeloma (MM). While increased infection risk has been shown in monoclonal gammopthy of undetermined significance (MGUS), data are limited for smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM). The iStopMM study at the University of Iceland (Reykjavik) found that persons diagnosed with SMM had an increased risk of infections, compared to both persons with MGUS (HR 1.37; 95% CI 1.00-1.87) and to individuals without MM precursors (1.36; 1.07-1.73).
