Impact of race and ethnicity on overall survival of patients undergoing CRS-HIPEC for appendiceal cancer

Treatment of patients with appendiceal cancer may include cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC). Analysis of the National Cancer Database evaluated the impact of race and ethnicity on overall survival of these patients. The perioperative outcomes (e.g., tumor grade, margins, hospital length of stay, readmission rates, and 30/90-day mortality) were similar among the groups. OS was significantly different by race/ethnicity (p=0.0029). Median OS was 145.9 months in the Hispanic group, 136.3 months in the non-Hispanic White group, and 106.7 months in the non-Hispanic Black group. The OS HR was 2.117 (p=0.0023) for NHB versus Hispanic and 1.549 (p=0.0463) for NHW versus Hispanic. The authors conclude that despite similar tumor and treatment characteristics, OS is associated with patient race/ethnicity.
