Global lifetime estimates of expected and preventable gastric cancers across 185 countries
Dr. Jin Young Park
A study by researchers of the International Agency for Research in Cancer and Amsterdam Medical Center suggests that 15.6 million people born between 2008 and 2017 globally are expected to develop gastric cancer sometime in their life; 76% of those cases may be attributible to Helicobacter pylori infection. The authors call for greater investment in the prevention of gastric cancer, particularly through population-wide H. pylori
screen-and-treat programs, to reduce the burden of gastric cancer worldwide.
