First-line nivolumab plus ipilimumab or nivolumab plus chemotherapy versus chemotherapy alone for advanced ESCC

The multinational phase 3 CheckMate 648 study randomized patients with previously untreated advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma 1:1:1 to nivolumab plus chemotherapy, nivolumab plus ipilimumab, or chemotherapy alone. Compared with chemotherapy alone, both nivolumab combinations resulted in superior OS, along with durable objective response and acceptable safety.
