Facility patient volume and survival among patients with malignant central nervous system tumors
Dr. Kimberly Johnson
Prior research indicates that the volume of central nervous system (CNS) tumor patients seen by a facility is associated with outcomes. However, most studies have focused on short-term survival and specific CNS tumor subtypes. Age-stratified analysis of National Cancer Database data on individuals diagnosed with a first malignant CNS tumor between 2004 and 2016 found a consistently reduced hazard of death for patients treated at higher versus lower (> 95th versus ≤ 70th
percentile) volume facilities. Significantly longer survival times within 5 years for higher versus lower volume facilities were observed, ranging from 1.20 months (age 15-39) to 3.08 months (40-65). Associations varied by CNS tumor subtype for all age groups.
