Evaluation of addition of ultrasonography to mammography in breast cancer screening

Secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial in Japan found that among asymptomatic women aged 40 to 49 years, screening mammography for breast cancer had low sensitivity. Adjunctive ultrasonography was associated with increased sensivity, both in women with dense breasts and in women with non-dense breasts. The authors conclude that supplemental ultrasonography should be considered as an appropiate imaging modality for breast cancer screening in asymptomatic women aged 40 to 49 years regardless of breast density.
