Analysis of cancer death certification and population data from the World Health Organization and Eurostat databases resulted in prediction of the numbers of deaths and age-standardized rates (ASRs) for 2023 in the EU-27. The predicted number of deaths is 1,261,990, corresponding with ASRs of 123.8/100,000 men (- 6,5% versus 2018) and 79.3/100,000 women (-3,7%). Most cancer displayed favorable predicted rates, with the exception of pancreatic cancer (stable in men and increasing in women) and female lung cancer. The authors conclude that if these trends can be maintained, a further 35% decrease of cancer mortality by 2035 may be realized.
