The current standard treatment for patients with inoperable, locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (LA ESCC) is definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy. A study at Samsung Medical Center (Seoul, South Korea) evaluated durvalumab plus tremelimumab and CCRT for LA ESCC. The treatment resulted in 24-month progression-free and overall survival rates of 57.5% and 75%, respectively. Compared with a historical control group treated with CCRT alone, the study population had significantly longer PFS (HR 0.52; p=0.040) and OS (HR 0.49; p=0.043). PD-L1 expression had strong predictive value in the study population, but not in the historical control group.
