Consumption of sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened beverages and the risk of liver cancer and chronic liver disease mortality in postmenopausal women
Dr. Xuehong Zhang
In 2017-2018 more than 65% of US adults consumend sugar-sweetened beverages daily. Analysis in the cohort of the Women’s Health initiative (98,786 postmenopausal women followed up for a median of 20.9 years), compared with consuming 3 servings or less sugar-sweetened beverages per month, women consuming 1 or more serving per day had significantly higher rates of liver cancer (18.0 vs 10.3 per 100,000 person-years; aHR 1,85) and chronic liver disease mortality (17.7 vs 7.1 per 100,000 person-years; aHR 1.68). These associations were not seen for consumption of artificially sweetened beverages.
