Comparison between 5-azacytidine treatment and allogeneic HSCT for advanced MDS in elderly patients

Prof. Nicolaus Kröger
Prof. Nicolaus Kröger

The multicenter study VidazaAllo in Germany recruted patients with higher-risk MDS aged 55-70 years, who received 4-6 cycles of 5-azacytidine followed by either HLA-compatible HSCT after reduced-intensity conditioning, or by continuous 5-aza if no donor was available. Bridging with 5-aza to HSCT was associated with a considerable rate of dropouts because of progression, death, and adverse events. Compared to continuing 5-aza, HSCT was associated with significantly improved event-free survival.
