Combined tissue and liquid biopsy improves outcomes in advanced solid tumors in the multicenter phase 2 ROME trial

The multicenter phase 2 ROME trial in Italy found that targeted therapy (TT) based on tissue (T) or liquid (L) biopsy resulted in better survival outcomes of patients with advanced or metastatic solid tumors compared with standard of care (SoC). Exploratory analysis of the trial is presented today at the Annual Meeting of AACR in Chicago. Although the concordance rate between T and L biopsies was only 49%, there was a substantial increase in detection of actionable alterations and improvement of survival outcomes with combined T + L versus T or L individually. The authors conclude that integrating both biopsy modalities improves precision oncology approaches.
