Cohort study of tomosynthesis versus digital mammography screening in women with a family history of breast cancer
Dr. Tong Li
Evidence of screening outcomes with digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) versus digital mammography (DM) in women with a family history of breast cancer is limited. A comparative cohort study of 208,945 women with a family history of breast cancer undergoing 502,357 screening examinations at centers of the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium, with a 1-year cancer follow-up, compared outcomes with DBT versus DM. DBT significantly reduced recall rates and increased specificity compared with DM, and reduced advanced cancer rates in women with extremely dense breasts. The authors conclude that screening with DBT may result in fewer harms than DM among women with a family history of breast cancer.
