Cognitive and behavioral characteristics of 9-year-old children after maternal cancer during pregnancy
Prof. Frédéric Amant
A multicenter cohort study follows children born after maternal cancer during pregnancy. At the mean age of 9.3 years (range 7.8-10.6) the mean cognitive and behavioral outcomes were within normal ranges. No significant difference in Full Scale Intelligence Quotient was found between types of treatment for maternal cancer (chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, trastuzumab, or no oncologic treatment). In children prenatally exposed to chemotherapy, no associations were found between FSIQ and chemotherapeutic agent, exposure level, of timing during pregnancy. The authors conclude that these results indicate a reassuring follow-up during the critical maturation period of late childhood.
