The United States Preventive Services Task Force first recommended low dose computed tomography (CT) screeing for people at high lung cancer risk in December 2013. Analysis of the National Cancer Database and the Surveillance Epidemiology End Results database found that this recommendation coincided with a shift towards detection of NSCLC in stage I and improvement of overall survival of these patients. Increases in the early detection of NSCLC between 2014 and 2018 are estimated to have saved 10,100 lives. However, these benefits did not appear to extend to patients living in economically deprived areas or to racial or ethnic minority groups.
